Instant SnacksSugar Cookies

3 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup sugar
2/3 cup butter, at room temperature
2 large eggs
1/4 cup buttermilk
1/2 teaspoon brandy
milk for glazing
sugar for sprinkling

1. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. Lightly grease 2 baking sheets.
2. In a bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt and whisk well.
3. In another bowl, using an electric mixer set on medium-high speed, cream the sugar and butter until smooth. Beat in the eggs, 1 at a time. Beat in the buttermilk and brandy. Gradually blend in the dry ingredients.
4. On a lightly floured work surface, roll out the dough to a thickness of 1/4 inch. Using a 2-inch round or shaped cookie cutter, cut out cookies and place on the baking sheets, leaving 1 1/2 inches between them. Brush with milk and sprinkle liberally with sugar. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes, until lightly colored. Cool on wire racks.

Makes: 3 to 4 dozen cookies
